How to Help a Member in Progressive Discipline

The Union and Union Representation are legally obligated to help those at risk on the job. When behavioral health, substance abuse, or stress seems to be the cause of problems at work, representation can be challenging.

In many cases, the member is in denial and feels ashamed. They may be defensive and will deny having any problem. In fact, denial is the primary sign of a behavioral health or addiction problem.

Some experts believe that the foundation of all progressive discipline is in an underlying stress-related condition that causes a pattern of behaviors that lead to disciplinary action.

When faced with a member in crisis, and looming disciplinary action, suspension, or even job termination, you may find that the following applies:

  • The individual is unable to recognize that they have a problem and will deny any symptoms
  • Individuals will deny the impact that these issues have on their work performance
  • The member will feel ashamed and guilty and will hide the issues at all costs, even when faced with termination

Union Workforce Initiative by Psyclarity Health works closely with Union representatives and the affected individual. We work hard to recommend a suitable course of treatment coupled with job protection strategies. Our assistance is ongoing, and we follow up on the member’s care and aftercare plan, and provide advocacy services every step of the way.

In some cases, these conditions may qualify as disabilities under federal law, state law, and case law. In these instances, medical and legal remediation may be available. We help with this too.

We are here to help, educate and support you every step of the way – 24/7 and at no cost to the Union or its members.

We support every aspect of your fight to be fairly represented, and in one phone call, we can sort out the level of care needed. In many cases, we can suspend progressive disciplinary action and provide the services that support a return to work with a “fit for duty” declaration.
